DesignStudio is a course at Brown University that focuses on many design methods and processes, and ways to fabricate our designs. My brother and I designed the smol chairĀ for the furniture module. We are experienced with wood working, and wanted to glorify the plywood layering (a component of plywood that is traditionally covered up). Plywood is a strong wood for structures and building, but not normally used for its look. Thus, we layered multiple pieces together, and had it flow into the wavy seat. The curves also fit the contours of the person. We used a ShopBot to carve the wood into organic shapes, then biscuit jointed larger pieces. We then soaked the thin sheet of wood to make it pliable, then fixed it as the main seat. We gave the chair an oil finish to emphasize the grains and layers of the wood. The chair has a sleek finish that augments the multiple plys while being comfortable to sit on.
